After reading Manson’s The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck, I decided to read Everything is Fucked: A book about hope.

Everything is fucked book review

Context: Mark Manson is a famous internet blogger who wrote the book The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck in 2016 which became an international bestseller. After his previous book, Mark decided to write another book, a book about hope, a book which takes you through the perspective of different generations, which helps you understand human nature through philosophy, which shapes you as a person, and a book which is the need of the hour.

About the book:

“We are a culture in need of something far more precarious. We are a culture and a people in need of hope” (p.09)

This book is divided into two parts, in the first part, Manson talks about Hope. The book starts with the story of Polish Warrior Pilecki who inspired generations and fought with everything at stake for his country. This story gives you an insight into the book, that even after sacrificing everything, there is no guarantee that things will change.

Manson has used Newton to demonstrate the laws of emotions. This is definitely the best part of the book. After reading this you understand yourself better, your emotions and reason behind feeling them become clear to you.

“Every institution will decay and corrupt itself. Each person, given more power and fewer restraints, will predictably bend that power to suit himself. Every individual will blind herself to her own flaws while seeking out the glaring flaws of others” (p.62)

In the First part, Manson also talks about how religions are formed and how to start your own religion. In fact, there is a complete guide inside which will take you through steps to form a religion!

I personally found the second part of the book more impacting and interesting. Manson shows us all that things are fucked, no matter what you do they will not change and that pain is the universal constant and only those who face this reality, succeed in achieving a satisfactory life.

In the second part, Manson has used philosopher Immanuel Kant’s ideas to grow and improve ourselves.

“Don’t cave to tribal impulses or hopeful deceits. Because there is no heaven or hell in the future. There are only the choices you make in each and every moment” (p.158)

The 7th chapter of the book ‘Pain is the universal constant’, is also one of my favorite chapters of the book.

I recommend this to everyone who wants to look at the bright side in this fucked up world and who is willing to confront his problems rather than avoiding them.
